Tutankhamun – His Tomb and its Treasures
When the archaeologist Howard Carter opened the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun for the first time on the 26 November 1922, he was overwhelmed by the treasures that met his eyes. Four chambers lay before him, some of them filled to the roof with funerary objects of immeasurable value, destined to accompany the dead king on his journey into the hereafter: jewellery, cult objects, amulets, coffers, chairs, weapons, musical instruments, insignia of power. Fashioned with the art of master craftsmen from the most beautiful materials such as ebony, alabaster, precious stones – and most of all gold.
The exhibition allows visitors to experience with all their senses the wonder of this moment – to walk into an overwhelming treasure chamber, to discover a world and its wonders long thought to be lost. The fascination of the vanished exotic kingdom on the Nile is conjured up again through modern technology.
Three of Tutankhamun’s tomb chambers have been reconstructed true to the originals and their dimensions, so that visitors receive an authentic impression of the space. Over 1000 replicas of the most important objects, fashioned by the best Egyptian craftsmen, can be admired there. The information about the culture and the spiritual world of the ancient Egyptians – their funerary cult, their gods, their dynasties, their mysterious hieroglyphic script – has been prepared and accessibly presented with state-of-the-art multimedia technology.
The centrepiece is of course Tutankhamun. Eighty-seven years after its discovery the tomb of Tutankhamun is opened once more – and you can be there! The audio guide included in the admission price will give you a particularly intense experience of the exhibition.
