The Port of Hamburg
Ahoi there shipmates!!!
Every year, about 13,000 seagoing vessels from all over the world enter the second biggest European port. From the Cruisecenter terminal to the historic Warehouse City, from the Landungsbrücken (the floating Piers) to the modern container harbour.
With a barge or big harbour boat tour or even a visit to one of the legendary Museum Ships, visitors can experience directly why Hamburg is called "The Gateway to the World".
Every Sunday morning from 05:00 a.m. to 09:30 a.m. (in the winter 16th Nov. till 14th March from 07:00 a.m.) Hamburg’s historical and traditional Fish market takes place. Since 1703 everything that has not been screwed down has been sold here!!! You can also enjoy a lush breakfast while listening to live music in the Fish Market Hall.
Since the summer of 2007 a further piece of history of the Hamburgian Port can be experienced – the emigrant world of "Ballinstadt". From there, about 5 million European emigrants started their trip to the "New World" (USA) between 1850 and 1939. You can researchyour family name to see if you have relatives in the "New World" or else where with the help of the Geneology computers.
In our booklet (Hamburg maritime) Hamburg Maritime, you will find tips and information about Harbour/Port tours, antique clippers and the spectacular projects like the Hafencity (Harbour City)and the "Elbphilharmonie", a new concert hall erected directly on the roof of an old disused warehouse. Other than a concert hall there will be living quarters, a hotel, shops, offices and cafes built there.
