St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn
There is much more to the Reeperbahn than strip shows and sex shops! It is a melting pot of diverse influences, trends and styles.
"Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb Eins…" A song once sung by the famous Hamburg Crooner Hans Albers is a legeng in Hamburg itself. Hans Albers and the Great Fire of 1842 are still an important part of the Hamburg history. In the St. Pauli quarter, besides the strip shows, the sex shops, diverse pubs, clubs, snack bars and restaurants, an alternative cultural scene has been established and musical theatres have also found a suitable location here.
For a long time the "mile of sin" has not only been the address of old-established erotic establishments, more and more young people with new ideas discover the "Kiez" and the neighbouring "Schanzenviertel" (Schanzenquarter) as a place of pulsing scene life. In St. Pauli you will find everything: from commercial to erotic, kebab shops to Asia snacks, yuppie bars to punk discos, old established inhabitants to Turkish families, trendy people to tramps, "FC St. Pauli" football club is the local team hence the name to the Hafenstrasse ("Harbour Street"), a street in the middle of St. Pauli with some problems on the one hand but very vivid on the other.
