Zoo and parks
Generous modern and historical gardens and park areas as well as the famous zoo "Tierpark Hagenbeck" also offer a great many opportunities to rest, relax, play and keep fit in Hamburg. Here are a few green highlights:
Hagenbeck Zoo
Is there any child who would not enjoy to feed a giraffe and gaze at an elephant baby or ride on a camel? Hagenbeck makes it possible! Because here monkeys, tigers and co. live in big areas which were designed according to their natural living conditions. A real highlight: the big outdoor enclosure of the elephants. Feeding the grey giants is expressly desired here - but only with fruit and vegetables, please.
Another attraction is the adventure aquarium. Here, visitors can start an expedition and explore the deepest tropical oceans, the tropical and sub-tropical jungle as well as mystic caves and grottos.

Planten un Blomen
The "Alten Wallanlagen", the old Town Ramparts, and the famous "Planten un Blomen" are situated in the middle of the City of Hamburg - a wonderful green leisure area with a botanical garden, tropical greenhouse and the biggest Japanese garden in Europe. Following the stream you will reach the park lake and the illuminated fountain organ installed in there. From May to September water games take place here by day, in the evening there are coloured illuminated fountain concerts (May to August 10:00 p.m. daily, in September 09:00 p.m. daily).
Stadtpartk (City Park)
When the weather is nice there is much action on the big meadow of the City Park: here, young and old come together to play football, have a picnic, a sunbath or have a trip on the Park Lake with a pedal or a rowing boat. In summer, on an open air stage, many concerts with international artists take place. But even when the weather is bad the Park is worthwhile a visit: because here one of the oldest planetariums in the world is located. Nowadays equipped with the most modern projectors, in the planetarium star presentations, simulations but also theatre acts and music shows are regularly performed.
Ohlsdorfer Friedhof (Ohlsdorf Cemetery)
With 405 hectares the Main Cemetery of Hamburg is the second-biggest in the world after Chicago. About 17 kilometres of streets and lanes lead you through the well-kept Hamburgian park which attracts many promenaders due to its numerous ponds and old trees especially during the blooming period.
