Fish Market
Stunned amazement on looking at the clock: what, nearly five o’clock, already?! With Hamburg’s offering of clubs and discos, an "all-night-party" is a local sport. Absolutely the coolest way to finish off a long night is a wander around the Fish Market in Altona.
Some 700 market traders open their stands right on the water’s edge every Sunday morning from 05:00 a.m. to 09:30 a.m. (from October to March not until 07:00 a.m.). Actually there is nothing that is not here: blood sausage and sweets, pastries, fruit, poultry and spices, cheese, candles and new and second-hand clothes. On top of that, jewellery, kitsch, odds and ends, nostalgic items and live animals. And, of course, fish – raw, marinated, boiled, smoked.
If fish turns your stomach first thing in the morning, wait for the return of the animal spirits at the water’s edge with a coffee in your hand, while the more courageous can bite heartily into a fried fish roll... By the way: right next to the Fischmarkt you will find the legendary Golden Pudel Club – a small shack with underground charm; it’s been a hot address for music since 1991!
