Studying & Living
Wherever 40.000 students study, live and party, trendy pubs, cinemas and ethnic shops cannot be far away.
All around the university campus to the west of the Alster, you can really immerse yourself in student life. The main artery of the area is the Grindelallee, where you will find many out-of-the-ordinary restaurants and snack bars, such as "Arkadash", a neighbourhood fixture with cheap Turkish meals, or "Café Backwahn" – a student meeting place par excellence with a super breakfast.
You should definitely have the "Abaton" on your list too: a cinema classic with a pub. Since 1970, Abaton has been pursuing its declared mission of showing a programme with a certain difference: many political films, small foreign productions and discussion events don’t just draw students and professors to Allende-Platz.
After touring the record shops and cafés you should make sure you call in at Von-Melle-Park (near Dammtor station). This is where the most important faculties are clustered, letting you easily gain an impression of the mass goings-on at the University of Hamburg.
