The DOM is a part of Hamburg’s tradition and guarantees adventure, fun, excitement and nostalgia. The name goes back to a group of merchants, craftsmen and jugglers, who, following some disagreements, were granted the right in 1337 to seek shelter in the cathedral “Marien-Dom” whenever the weather was particularly bad. At the end of the 19th century, the fairground showmen and machine operators found their new “home” on Heiligengeistfeld, the venue of today’s DOM.
The spring fair in March, the summer Dom (the so-called “Hummelfest“) in July and the winter Dom (Dom-Markt) in November have one thing in common – for a period of approx. 4 weeks in every case, “Heiligengeistfeld“ turns into the single most bustling fairground from the afternoon until late at night.
Rollercoasters fly past stands where hot corn on the cob is sold, and next to the roundabouts for the small and not so small ones, you can smell roasted almonds and see candied fruit. Fried sausages and potatoe fritters are as indispensable as various waffle makers. The Ferris wheel continues to be the distinguishing feature of the Dom over the years, and an additional adventure area with a new theme every time has also been an integral element of the event for the past years. Every Friday at 10:30 p.m., a gigantic firework attracts the attention of countless locals.
